paver sealing
Paver Sealing
Brick paver sealing is the main service we offer here at the Shine and Shield. Paver Sealing goes together with many other services we offer to keep your brick pavers in the best condition possible. We have ample experience with the interlocking paver system and which allows us to catch and fix minor issues during the maintenance process that could otherwise lead to larger issues. These are some of the crucial steps throughout our paver sealing process that makes our process the best for your pavers and your wallet in the long run.
Sealing Pavers: Shine and Shield Proprietary Sealant Advantage
Over the years many “solutions” have been offered to deal with the potential maintenance issues that the owners of interlocking concrete pavers face. Primary among them was the introduction of solvent-based acrylic sealers, water-based sealers, and stabilized joint sands. These attempted solutions added some benefits while creating other problems
of their own. Even today, for every one good product on the market there is at least a hundred terrible products.
Here at Shine and Shield we have a catalogue of sealers to fit each home owners specific needs. These will not yellow, peal, or develop whiting issues when professionally installed. It is important to remember that any sealer can fail when installing incorrectly or without proper surface prep. Shine and Shield Sealers have outstanding chemical resistance and forms a very hard protective coating.
“Our products are state-of-the-art and address existing industry concerns regarding pavers turning white, durability without toxicity, and disposal considerations associated with solvent-based sealers.”
This line of proprietary sealers are custom-made specifically for your surface, here are six major benefits of sealing your outdoor surfaces:
1. A Clean Surface
This is the most obvious benefit because we cannot seal your surface until it has been cleaned thoroughly. Imagine if we applied sealant to a driveway with mold and weeds. No one wants that.
2. Color Enhancement
If you have brick pavers, sealing will enhance, preserve, and protect their natural colors from fading caused by harmful UV Rays. We offer three different types of enhancement, Natural, Wet Look, and Ultra-Wet Look. Natural will offer minimal change in appearance and the Wet Looks will make the pavers look as though they are wet.
3. Sand Stabilization
Our Shine and Shield Process allows for superior sand joint stabilization. Stabilizing the sand is an optional service that will help to eliminate sand washout, weed growth, and and insect intrusion. The process also helps to prevent the bricks from shifting, thus creating a much more solid foundation. Not needed for concrete. We use ASTMC144 grade sand specifically designed for the paver interlocking system.
4. Algae & Mold Inhibitor
Sealing concrete, travertine, or brick pavers will inhibit algae and mold growth. Our sealers dry quickly and keep moisture from penetrating the pores of each surface. Moisture is the #1 cause of mold and mildew growth.
5. Protection
When bricks, travertine, and concrete are properly sealed, you are putting a barrier between its surface and anything that can stain it such as grease, oil, transmission fluid, hydraulic fluids, iron deposits, and anything else. Adding a protective barrier will help prevent those unsightly stains commonly found on driveways. Sealing will also keep pavers from becoming pitted and worn looking.
6. Maintenance
Maintaining your surface becomes much easier once it’s been sealed. Mold, bird droppings, and small spills can usually be cleaned up with a mild detergent soap and a garden hose. You can also take advantage of our maintenance package. See our maintenance package section for more details.
Why do I need to Seal my Pavers?
• If they are never sealed, you will lose the original finish and start to see exposed aggregate
• Not sealing the pavers makes them harder to clean, and they will have to be cleaned more often
• Sealing your pavers protects them from permanent stains such as oil, grease, wine, etc
• Our sealing process stabilizes the joint sand and helps inhibit weed growth
• Sealing your pavers takes away the “dry” faded look, and replaces it with an illustrious “Wet-Look” finish that enhances the colors
Don't Lose Money, protect Your Investment
In short, home owners like yourself pay quite a bit for this asset and if not taken care of it can quickly become a liability. We’ll save you the math and put it in simple terms: Installing a 1,000 sq ft of brick pavers can range between $6500-$10,000. Algae, weed growth, water erosion, and UV washout can deteriorate your brick pavers past restoring to original form in as little as 5 years taking your money with it.
Conversely, proper maintenance can protect your investment to last generations while supercharging your homes curb appeal. Not to mention the barrier against algae and joint stabilization that sealing can provide.
There is nothing quite like pulling up onto a beautiful paver driveway or hosting a party on vibrant paver deck that has been professionally cleaned and sealed. Make your driveway and backyard another point of pride in the home you work so pay for!
Other Sealers
Traditional Water-Based Sealers
These products were introduced primarily to comply with lower VOC limits required by several states and to reduce toxic exposure for contractors and the environment. These are traditionally single stage chemicals that tend not to be very durable and also have the risk of “blushing” (trapping water vapor) thus turning white. Some have the ability to provide joint stabilization but have been found to wear prematurely. Most water-based sealers “low volume of solids”. This is a fancy way of saying that they are mostly water. This is a negative thing when you are trying to build a protective film-forming coating that will protect your pavers for years to come. Sadly, traditional water-based sealers usually only last one year at best.
Solvent-Based Sealers
Solvent-based sealers are another option, but they are notorious for “whiting issues”. They are not breathable coatings and therefore they trap water vapor. When the water vapor gets trapped it then breaks the sealers bond causing the sealer to fail. Unlike water-based this brick paver sealer “high volume of solids”, which means they typically build a significant film forming a layer. This, however, turns out to be a big problem when the sealer turns cloudy and needs to be stripped. Solvent-based sealers are among the hardest and most costly to strip, and they are the most common to turn white.
Another concern with solvent-based sealers is toxicity. They have a very high VOC (volatile organic compounds) rating. They contain carcinogens which are extremely harmful to humans and animals to breath. Exposure to carcinogens has been linked to causing birth defects, Alzheimer’s, and even cancer.
Solvent-based sealers typically use an acrylic resin to seal the pavers. Acrylic coatings have been around for a long time and are still very common to find being used by contractors, however, urethane technology has proven to be a better resin that bonds better and lasts longer. Shine and Shield only uses breathable water based high quality sealers. While these sealers are more expensive, they are worth every penny.

Concrete Pavers
Most paver driveways and paver pool decks that you’ll see in Florida are made from concrete. When these pavers are made, the manufacturer mixes concrete with color pigments to achieve the color of the paver. Once they are installed, they are exposed to the sun’s UV rays, the acid in rain, impact from rain, salt in the air and in salt water pools, traffic, etc. Concrete Cleaning won’t cut it, the sun’s rays will deteriorate the color pigment in the paver causing them to slowly loose their color. The other elements cause a breakdown of the finer cement material on the surface of the paver exposing the rocks in the concrete mix. These rocks don’t accept the color pigment during the manufacturing process, so they will be their natural color and not the color of the paver. These are concrete pavers. Notice the line down the middle. The pavers on the right appear more worn than the pavers on the left. That’s because the pavers on the left are under a roof overhang that blocks out the sun and rain. The pavers on the right get exposure to the sun and rain. Had these pavers been sealed, the ones on the right would look like the ones on the left.
